December 2013

I, Nicole, completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney. The University of Sydney is great for getting involved in student activities, and for allowing students to try heaps of different subjects. In my second year of university I acted and danced in the 2009 production of Science Review, it was great to be involved in such a fun and rewarding project with other scientists! I terms of courses I believe it is really important to not just choose something and stick to it, but try everything, then make an executive decision on what you enjoy the most. In my first and second year of university I did courses on mythology, archaeology, economics, pure and applied maths, physics, chemistry, computing, and more. They lead me to physics, it just worked for me!

I have just completed a Master in Philosophy in Physics at the University of New South Wales in association with the Australian Science Technology Organisation (ANSTO). My research is in, investigating a new type of data storage for computers called multiferroics. To investigate this I did neutron scattering experiments at ANSTO. I was first introduced to the scientists at ANSTO through applying and getting into one of their summer internships after my second year at university. It was a real eye opener to see how science can be used to solve problems and how to create and setup experiments!

Next I am moving to Switzerland to undergo my PhD. I have been offered a position at the same institution Einstein went to for his undergraduate, degree: The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

So good luck year 12s, and get excited about life!:)
