Out at Black Towers, on the fringes of the Inner West, we have an air conditioning unit.

Today was the first time we've ever used it in anger. On reverse-cycle. There was frost on the grass. Frost! In Sydney!

I'm glad we didn't move here for the weather.

I once had a boss who was born in Scotland. Before she came to Australia she worked in Norway. In spite of this she claimed that Sydney was the coldest city she'd ever lived in. Anywhere with a more serious winter has central heating it seems.

Oh, I second that. It has never been as cold as Vancouver, Canada in the vinter or UK in the early spring... those leeking windows with no 'padding to stop warm air from leaving and cold air from entering' or one glass windows?! (Got to love those three glass windows when the cold is oppressing.)

Of course, down south in the States where I am now I have to say that why on earth one puts the heating through the air conditioning when that is located high in the celing??? I mean, it is wonderful during hot summer months (like now) but the few colder ones... hmm... the energy bill was substatially higher. Guess it is hot more often than cold.

Oh, yeah, I mean you could have been in the UK and lived through the coldest May and the second-wettest June since records began (or something like that). Of course now the clouds are gone my hay fever is back, what joy.

Plus this being the UK nowhere has useful air conditioning.

Well, we've had the coldest morning for 20 years, (only 1 C above the coldest ever) and lots and lots of rain.
