What's for breakfast?

9 September, 2008

[The Dean] invites you to join us at the QVB Tearoom on Wednesday 10 September for our September Graduate Connections Breakfast

Ooh, shiny!

Our speaker will be Dr Jim Peacock of the CSIRO. Dr Peacock is a CSIRO Fellow who will soon retire as Chief Scientist of Australia. Dr Peacock is in a unique position to illustrate the role that Science will need to play to contribute to Australia’s ongoing prosperity with the topic, "Science Education - a prerequisite for an Innovative Australia".

Woohoo! Sounds like fun!

Prices are $45 for Alumni, $50 for Friends or Guests and tables of eight can be booked for $320.

*cough*.

So what they're actually saying is

"Please contribute to Australia's ongoing prosperity by stumping up your hard-earned."

The crazy thing is that this email is disguised as a 'Science Faculty Event', which you might think is something to do with science communication. But no, it's a begging event—to which I have no objection as such, but this is leaving a slightly bad taste in my mouth.

Not to rob you of your delightful sense of indignation, but that is only twice the price of morning tea at that particular venue...which is still a shocking price for hot water poured over yard clippings.

Interesting comparison with what NPG charged people to attend its recent Science Blogging Conference.

Indeed, Maxine. And can I say how much I appreciate it?

SD: I'm a little concerned that you are so au fait with the prices in such establishments in this septic city. How the other half live, eh?

No - I looked it up on the Internet.

They have really pretty toilets there, though.

Tell it to the judge.
