ARTHUR and Griffin Independent present the Sydney premiere of RETURN TO EARTH, by Lally Katz. The cast will spend a little over a month rehearsing in the Rex Cramphorn Studio. For two weeks they will open the rehearsal doors to allow Performance Studies students to observe their processes as part of PRFM 3962 Rehearsal to Performance.

Return to Earth is a modern Australian fable about marching to the beat of your own drum. It’s also a deeply-felt story about family, sacrifice and reconnection. After that, it gets a lot more complicated. Former Griffin Studio resident director Paige Rattray (The Sea Project, Cut Snake) enters the highly imaginative world of Australia’s foremost young female playwright Lally Katz (Neighbourhood Watch, Stories I Want to Tell You in Person) for this strikingly unconventional play. Starring Logie Award winner Shari Sebbens (The Sapphires), Return to Earth opens the door to a whole new universe at the SBW Stables Theatre from 4 September.

When prodigal daughter Alice returns to the sleepy seaside town of Tathra, she’s so out of touch with reality and social mores that she can’t even remember how to eat. Maniacally cheerful, her parents are determined to gloss over the missing years, but her brother and former best friend are not so quick to forgive. Where has Alice been? What’s her real name? And why does she hold the key to their happiness?

Director Paige Rattray says, “Return to Earth is surreal drama, with a swirl of perspectives. Are we looking at the dark side of suburban kitsch or a warm tale of homecoming and redemption? This is a world in which reality is deeply unstable. Think Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind meets Memento on a trip to the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, with your grandmother in tow and the TV on in the background.”

The strong cast comprises Bruce Carter (Redfern Now, The Gods of Wheat Street), Yure Covich (Fury – Sydney Theatre Company), Laurence Coy (The Removalists – Tamarama Rock Surfers), Tahlia Hoffman Hayes, Mark Langham, Shari Sebbens (A Hoax – Griffin Theatre Company, The Sapphires, Redfern Now), Wendy Strehlow (I Want to Sleep with Tom Stoppard – Tamarama Rock Surfers, Henry 4 – Bell Shakespeare, All Saints, A Country Practice), Catherine Terracini (Bug – Griffin Theatre Company, Faust – Bell Shakespeare) and Scarlett Waters.

ARTHUR, a collaboration between director Paige Rattray and producer Belinda Kelly, started making text-based and devised new Australian work in 2011. Their award-winning show Cut Snake tours to the Brisbane Festival and through regional NSW later this year. www.arthurproductions.com.au.
