Barbara Campbell, performance still, “Well, there you are”, 2015

Barbara Campbell is finalising two bodies of work for her solo exhibition ex avibus at the University Art Gallery and Macleay Museum scheduled to open May 2 and May 25, 2015 respectively. At the University Art Gallery she'll be premiering Well, there you are, a drawing, video and responsive audio installation based on Barbara's research into interspecies agency between birds and humans. Well, there you are is the second major installation of her larger long-term project ex avibus (Latin: from the birds). The first component was the interactive video installation close, close that has been exhibited in Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney and Brisbane in the exhibition LANDSEASKY (curator Kim Machan, MAAP) in 2014. close, close was developed at the Rex Cramphorn studio in January-Feburary 2014.

Last year Barbara completed the drawing component of Well, there you are during a residency at the Rex Cramphorn Studio. The performative process of drawing was captured on video and this material is being edited as a single channel video for the exhibition. During her March residency this year, Barbara is working with Sydney University design computing graduate Sam Cole to make the responsive audio element of the work. The drawings, sound installation and video were all generated from a single encounter between bird enthusiasts (including Barbara) and shorebirds taking off from Roebuck Bay, WA, on their annual northern migration in 2012. The birds created a certain kind of attention and response in the humans that have in turn created her performed drawings and again in turn, will generate other human responses in the gallery context.

The body of work for ex avibus that will be shown in the Macleay Museum's display cases is a large series of mounted watercolours which Barbara will lay with shorebird specimens from the Macleay’s collection.
