Sydney Uni has a fairly specific enrolment procedure, so it’s good to have some information about what you have to do if your away!

So, you’ve booked a trip to Europe for January and February, and you wont be around for offers and enrolment. I’ve spoken to lots of worried students and parent about the enrolment procedure, so I figured I might as well write it out so that everyone can have a resource for understanding the procedure.

At the University of Sydney, in order to accept your offer, we need you to come in and enrol. This is different to lots of other universities, so its important that you understand how important enrolling is in our offer process! If you don’t enrol, you will be in danger of losing your offer, so it’s really important that you come in and enrol.

Enrolment for Main Round Offers takes places on the week of the 23rd of January, so if your away you will need to find someone to come into Uni to enrol for you. This can be anyone who will come into Uni to do it for you, Parent, relatives, friends, next door neighbours, anyone!!! This person is what we call a ‘Proxy’, and they need authorisation in order to enrol you on your behalf. We have a form online, its at www.usyd.edu.au/su/studentcentre/proxy/proxy.html . It is really important that you fill in this form before you go away, or fax it back to your proxy, so that they can enrol on your behalf. If they don’t have any proof that they have your permission, even if its your mum, they cant enrol on your behalf. So do that now!!

When preparing the information for your Proxy, make sure they know what course you are enrolling in, and what time and place they need to be at. Enrolment has set times and locations, so its really important that they know where to go and what time they need to be there, it would be terrible if they missed the session or got lost!

They will also need a few more things. Firstly, they will need money to pay your compulsory student fees. You have to pay Student Fees regardless of wether or not you are a Commonwealth supported student or a Full Fee student, so make sure they have money for that.

Secondly, they will need your Unit of Study choices. You need to pick your subjects and send them to your proxy, so have a look at your faculty website and see which subjects you want to do for the first year. Some degrees have set subjects but you will find that you will have to pick subjects for most degrees, but its particularly important for the wider degrees like Arts and Science.

Your proxy will also need to bring your postal address and evidence of your acceptance of residency if you are a permanent resident. It would also be fantastic if they had a copy of the offer letter, but its not the end of the world if they don’t.

So all I think you need to do now is make sure you buy them a present too to say thankyou for enrolling on your behalf!! I’ve always thought nothing says thankyou quite as nicely as a new Ferrari (if anyone is prepared to reward a proxy with a Ferrari for enrolling for them, post a comment and Ill do it for you!!!).
Well, hope your tops, be good, and have fun on the holiday!!!
