UNIfied: Getting ready for Uni

14 December, 2005

Next year is going to be a new and exciting experience. For those of you who like to be prepared to take the bull by the horns, here are a few ideas to help you get ready.

If you haven’t been to the campus before, the holidays are a good chance to come and check it out. Get a group of friends together and come in for a day out. Although there aren’t many students on campus at the moment, there are lots of places open for food and you can check out the library and the larger lecture theatres. It is sometimes nice to get to know the place without the mad rush of students in March. You can also call into the Union Access office in Manning House to pick up the latest information about campus events for next year. The Union provides services and runs the clubs and societies program on campus and will be a key aspect of your social calendar at Sydney University. The campus gym and aquatic centres are also open during the holidays so bring your swimmers on a hot day and go for a swim.

Also once you have an offer, this is the perfect time to start thinking about what subjects you would like to enrol in. You can check out the faculty handbooks online at www.usyd.edu.au/handbooks and this is a great way to make sure that you know what subjects you want to study by the time enrolment comes around. The subject descriptions will give you an idea of what sort of work you will be doing and the more informed you are about that, the more likely you will make the right choice for your subject selection.

After the exams the last thing you probably want to think about is study. However, if you are thinking of taking arts subjects it’s a good idea to find out what texts you will be studying during the semester and start reading or watching them. Trust me, when university begins your reading lists pile up so this is a great time to get ahead. You don’t have to study them in depth but being familiar with them will help a lot during semester.

Thanks Tim, I was after the handbook and you have the link! Really appreciate it!

Hey Tim, thanks for all the info.
Just one question, how can I find out what readings I will need for next year? I've found the course handbooks but I don't think they're there...
Thanks for that.
