Okay, this has little if any relevance to Uni, but I’m going to indulge myself and write the top ten cars to drive to Uni to really make a statement! (Well, I would really be impressed, and within some sort of reason, so a $35K limit)
As some of you may have gathered, I like cars just a little bit. When meeting family friends now they often wildly recount stories of how I told them upon arrival at their houses for functions and the like what models of car we had passed on the drive on our way (often as a 4 or 5 year old, the stories are less funny when I was 20). I also claim that my Uncle, who races Historic Touring Cars (Group N), is actually my real father, as he is the only one who I can talk to at length about who drove the Yellow Mini Cooper S at Morgan Park in Round 3 of the Queensland Group N championship (yes, I’m really quite bad) who will actually respond and not attempt to have me committed for madness. Yes, I am really, really tragic when it comes to Motor Racing and Old Cars, so here are ten cars that would really impress me if you came and parked at University. To all those who don’t like cars, you wont get most of this, so sorry. I’ve also set a $35K limit to keep some sort of sanity to it (That’s a nice VW Golf, lots of people get those for their 1st car!)
1. 1965 Ford Mustang C Code: The original Pony car, everyone would see you coming in one of these bad boys. I think they look wonderful, and everyone knows them, so I think that this would be super cool to turn up in.
2. 1994 Peugeot 205 GTi: No one will see you coming, but dead set, these cars are like go-karts, and they’re about the size of a small matchbox, so you could park it pretty much anywhere, which is great for the Uni. They’re cheap as chips to run, and they don’t cost the earth either
3. 1960 MGA: Everyone knows or has an MGB, but these are a little classier, and have a little more character. I love the big Healey’s (Austin Healey 100/4, 100/6, 3000’s etc), but they are 35K plus, so these are a good compromise instead. Imagine the sun tan you could get on the way to Uni!!
4. 1973 BMW 3.0 CS: The BMW E9 coupes are really, really pretty cars, and they don’t cost an arm and a leg in the base form. They are pillar-less too (that means there is no bit of metal between the doors, so you can put all the windows down and it’s like a convertible!). This was the car of choice for movie stars in the early 70s, so why not arrive in style you star you!
5. 1972 Triumph TR6: Ragtops will really impress quite easily, and imagine how much fun it would be to cruise in with the wind in your hair? It would be grand, and the TR6 is such a modern looking car, despite being 30 years old.
6. 1968 Holden Monaro HK: Yeah, everyone has a new Monaro, so why not get the original and show them whats what! They’re big cars, might be hard to park round Uni, and they tend to drink a lot of petrol, but you want to be seen! You will be heard in one of these bad boys too!
7. 1972 Valiant E49 Charger: I’ve always wanted one so that people could come up to me and say, ‘Hey Charger!’ I nearly bought two in Year 12, I was going to get them for $500 bucks, but when there is grass growing up through the good one, you know it’s going to be expensive!
8. 1961 Jaguar Mk II 3.8ltr: Whilst these Big Jags might look old and slow, they actually won the Australian Touring Car Championship (by Bob Jane, you know, Bob Jane T-Marts) and where used by the Police as chase cars (they were dead set one of the fastest cars on the road, the Subaru WRX of the early 60s). I think they look great too, they just scream cool. There is also one that stars in the Nostradamus Kid, which was filmed mainly at Sydney Uni too, so you would be like a movie star too! How cool!
9. 1984 Audi Quattro: These are 200 HP 4WD Turbo Monsters, yet they look like Grandma’s old shopping car (well not quite…). I’ve thought seriously about getting one because you would beat most things at the lights, yet no one would know what it was!
10. 1970 BMW 2002: Yeah, I had one, so I had to include it! If you had one of these, I would come up and start talking to you and probably ask if I could buy it off you. They’re wonderful, look the goods (when tricked up) and can be seriously quick too (Mine had a lot of power standard, but find a good one and go from there). I prefer the round tail- light ones, but great cars all round.
Well there is probably the most self-indulgent blog that I have ever written. I enjoyed it, most of you probably have no idea about any of the cars. But thanks for reading it anywho, leave a comment if you have any suggestions (telling me I’m mad is not a suggestion….)
Tata,
B

It seems Brendon has omitted the sexiest car of them all...the 2000 Holden Astra (white, of course.) He has also failed to mention the importance of naming one's car...always alliteratively. Say...Betsy the Barina, Ally the Astra?
And you call yourself an expert? Tsk, tsk...

Well, although I do love cars, I do not like to give them names, as really, they should have enough character themselves without the need to create one. I have had terms of reference for all my cars, but its only their colours (how many other people have Orange Cars?), and when you buy and sell as many cars as I do you shouldnt become too attached! Old Cars are things of great beauty, so its unfair to hold onto them for too long. To quote Barry Humphries, 'Sadly, beautiful things of this kind are merely lent to us for a while then passed on.'Sting also summed this up well when he sang,'If you love someone, set them free'.

I'm suprised at you, Brendon. There is no real question as to the best. It has to be the big blue and white Mercedes Mk5 - 11.1m long, 3m high, 5.3m wheelbase, 4-door, sliding windows, Bosch alternator, fluorescent interior lighting (tres sexy), 6 cylinder engine and best of all, it gets me from Town Hall to Parramatta Rd for 80 cents (with concession card) every day. I love Sydney Busses.

Mmmm... I would like to know your opinion on a readily accessibly, good-looking and economical (small) car. I am in Perth and drive around for work (sales) so need a good-looking car ASAP!
Thanks!
Nick
