Its nearly here Team Cool, O Week and the start of Uni! How excited are you?!?!?! I thought that I would tell you how I got on in past O Weeks, please excuse embellishment or discrepancies in the actual story as I cant remember all of it, but what I do I will recount for you now.

Hello, how are you Tiger? What’s been the go in your land lately? I’m sure it was hours of fun! I had a really fun day yesterday, I went Go-Karting out at Eastern Creek with some friends from work (they are also student advisors within the Uni, you can email them if you have a look at the Email a student page). It was tops! We went on the Nine Horsepower Karts first, then I graduated (the others piked) to the Thirteen Horsepower Karts. I have since decided that the thirteen HP race was the Sydney Uni Cup, and seeing there were no other students in the race, I was crowned Champion of Karting at Sydney Uni (self crowned might I add. I actually spent about 30 minutes looking at the session times from both races, I’m not competitive at all, even though everyone in the car was laughing at me as I protested every five minutes upon some discovery). As champion I will accept challenges, but only after a series of qualifying events…. Or maybe if you post a comment…. Or invite me…. I will go again with anyone….please???

Well, that’s enough of that silliness. This is about O Week, not go Karting. Indeed both events share one important ingredient though, FUN!! O Week is a really good fun time, but as I have said a 1000 before, it’s up to you to make the most of it! (I sound like such a nark don’t I… Do this, do that, do a dance, blah blah blah. Sorry).

Well, in my first year I turned up and cruised the stalls for about an hour and a half with some friends seeing what the go was. The front lawns are covered with fete stalls, and divided into sports and clubs and the like. There was food, and bands, and dancing, and an Elephant, and lots of fun to be had (see I embellished the story a bit there, you might not have noticed). I went round like the shy thing that I am and joined only a few things, like Subski and the Debating Club I think. Subski is the social skiing club on campus, but they’re more like the Party club on campus. I got sucked in by super slick marketing (she was very pretty) and payed the $10 or so membership, which gave me a key ring (It was a bottle opener, I should have known what I was doing! I was so naïve!) and some other junk, and promises of wild and entertaining nights. Well they did deliver on the wild nights (or so I have read) but I never actually went to any, too scared of it all! $10 well spent indeed. I think it would have been good to go, but I didn’t know anyone and I was scared (see what happens when you don’t talk to people!!! You end up with a $10 key ring!), but as I now know, I would have made tons of friends so I feel a bit silly about that.

The debating club was good too, I got a coaching job out of them. I never actually went to any events, but I have gotten to know most of them since any who (mainly from Manning Bar). If you really enjoy debating then Sydney has a really good team (we go to worlds and the like too, Austral’s etc) so I think that you should get involved. I probably should have spoken, I do tend to enjoy the sound of my own voice, so I think that you should go on for me, Young Jedi.

In second year I think I went for the food and not much else. I went round and talked to some friends, I think I might have joined the ALP then too. Again I didn’t really do anything with them, I’ve signed a few petitions and the like, but nothing serious.

In third year I decided to join the tennis club and the Triathlon club, and I ended up playing tennis most weeks. Again I was trying to impress the girls at tennis, but it was actually really good fun to get out and have a game once a week. You do get to know more people, and it is fun, so do it!

Whilst I didn’t really get involved in many of the clubs to a large extent, I did get to know a lot of people in them just by talking to them regularly, and from that I made lots of friends. It was through these channels that I did get to know people, so I can only imagine how many more I would have met if I would have actually done stuff with the clubs!! Again, you can avenge my lack of involvement. Go on, do it for me! Ill check up on you!! (Well no I wont, do it for yourself, I will be proud as punch though!)

Alright, I’m going to bust a move and bounce! (That means I’m going. Yeah, I’m going to buy 21st presents, and wash Mum’s car! Its filthy, embarrassing to drive!!)

Okay, see you round like a rissole,

B-Diddy

before laughing at my horribly embarrassing email address, please answer the following...i was not at o-week...could you please email me the contact number or details through which i can contact the subski society..i am interested in membership.
thanks, kristie (first year of course)

Before I tell you the contact details for Subski, Kristie, I must warn you about this society.

First, there is little to no skiing involved. Do not be fooled by the name. (There is no 'subbing', either, disappointingly.)

Secondly, you will become a bona fide "Cool Person" if you join Subski. You will be drawn into the world of toga parties and TP-ing (don't ask.) You will possibly never see your family again, as you will be too busy selling tickets for the bi-weekly party, celebrating the one week anniversary of your last party.

Good luck to you on your endeavours to reach the dizzy heights of awesome-ness...but why do you have to leave the rest of us behind?

(PS You can contact Subski through the Beige Pages, which are listed on the Union's website. Click on
http://www.usuonline.com/clubsocs/directory/)

PPS Don't say I didn't warn you!

Subski is not like that. Like he said he never went to any Subski events.

Subski hosts the best parties of all the university societies (union included) and organises 3 ski trips. The trips are fantastic whether you ski or not and you are sure to meet people who will become good friends.

Yes you will become cool if you join SUBSKI but i guess it isn't exactly an exclusive group.
