Feelin’ kinda sporty

21 January, 2006

Sport is a huge part of Sydney Uni, so come Grads and undergrads and fellows, Gaudy profs in reds and yellows, Sing with lungs as tough as bellows To our 'Varsity. (That’s the first bit of the rugby club song…)

Yo Yo, how are you Charger? Firstly, well done!!!!!!! See your out the other side now, and your still breathing, wasn’t that bad hey!!!! YAY!! (Sorry for all the exclamation marks, it’s great that you have gotten through it though!!).

Well, now that your stepping closer to the Uni-cycle, I think you should start to think about playing sport here too. Sport is a wonderful way to meet people at Uni, and there are so many teams and sports that it caters for lots of different people too.

Firstly, what I think you should do is have a look at the Sports Union Website, it’s http://www.susport.com/ From there you can see all the different things that we offer, and there are lots.

For social sport, the Union offers Indoor Mixed Netball, Indoor Soccer, Indoor Mixed Volleyball and 3 on 3 Bball. They’re all pretty good fun, and the facilities are really tops too (Indoor makes you fit too!!).

From there it moves to Inter-faculty sport. There are bucket loads of sports to do here, including one of my personal favourites, Ultimate Frisbee (I’ve never played it, I don’t think I would like it much, it’s just great to watch. The action, the excitement, the atmosphere, it’s got it all). This is also a great way to meet people from your faculty, and have a bit of healthy fun in the process.

One of the rowdiest things available to athletes at uni is the University Games that take place twice a year (we compete in the Eastern University Games and the Australian University Games). While you do have to play pretty hard when you do play (some other Uni’s take it a little less seriously, but we are generally the champions!), there is bucket-loads of time to have fun too. This year they’re going to be in Coffs Harbour (EUG) and in Adelaide (AUG), so dead set, it would be tops! I don’t want to tell you stories, would make your hair curl (and its all hearsay, I have never been).

Whilst there are also all these Internal University Sports activities, we also have clubs in a really wide variety of sports that compete in local comps. We have clubs for sports from AFL to Wakeboarding, so there is a lot to get involved with too. Lots of the clubs are very strong clubs so it might be hard to join some (like the Rugby Club, who made the finals in every single grade last year, and some Bball teams, who play in the WNBL and the like), but most clubs have teams that cater for all skill levels. Again the best thing might be to look at the Website, and go from there.

I know I am a bit of a sports nut, but I think that its really important to keep active when you start uni. Lots of people stop playing sport once they get to uni, and your decline in fitness can often affect your work and the like, so it’s always best to try and keep up some exercise once you start. We are really lucky at Sydney to have all these channels to pursue to enjoy sport, so why not use them!?!?!?!?!?

As you might know, I play Rugby and Tennis, and have dabbled with Triathlon too. My deep dark secret is that I play Rugby for Gordon, who play against Sydney Uni (It’s actually not really that deep, nor that dark as I do love Gordon!! I Just don’t mention it that often around Uni). I was already playing for the Staggies, so I didn’t want to change to the opposition, but Sydney Uni is one of the best Rugby Clubs in Sydney (they actually established Rugby in Australia), so they’re a great place to be at. I loved playing social tennis at Uni, made some tops friends, and got my kick serve back (we play on real grass courts, had never done that till this point, was really different. You play with a very different style!). The resources are just great, so if you love sport like I do, you will love what we have to offer!

Well that’s my little rant over, hope your well tops, and as the Rugby Team says:

Up the Students!

Hi Brendon. I love tennis. I just moved from Canberra for Moore College job (near Syd uni) and am looking for somewhere to play with great social tennis, can you help?
