Hot hot hot learning

8 February, 2006

What could be hotter than studying at Sydney Uni?

Studying in the summertime, that's what...

Summer School runs from the start of January to the end of February, and despite it sounding like the very last way you'd like to spend your summer, there are actually some pretty good reasons to spend the season on campus.

Some people want to do it because they've failed a subject; some want to accelerate their degree, so they can graduate faster and get out there into the great beyond. Some people think it's a good idea to study one subject intensively, rather than four at once. This will make sense to you in about 4 months time, when you will feel like you are trying to navigate a cruise missile with one hand and carefully prepare a sequel to Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time with the other. I like to refer to this brain-sizzling time as "exams."

My friend, Anna is at Summer School at the moment, and she enlightened me with a new fact just today...that lots of Summer School students are actually from other universities (even from overseas.) They figure (quite rightly) that Summer School is a great way to get a taste from the Sydney smorgasboard.

Just looking through the brochure, I've found a stack of subjects I'm interested in. There are over 100 subjects from ten faculties, and I think the best thing about it is that it allows you a bit of freedom. If you're in a really structured degree, say Engineering or Pharmacy, you don't have room for electives. But at Summer School, you can study a language, or dabble in some genetics...or whatever you want, really!

You can check out the website at www.summer.usyd.edu.au...I know next summer is a long way off, but mark it in your little black books just in case!
