So you have just left school, complete with Careers Advisor and Counsellor, so who can you go to at Uni? We also offer these services, and a whole heap more. Part 1 or 1

I’m so happy right now, (Beyonce would think it Crazy) thanks to a comment left on the Blog, I have a subject to write on! This is so exciting, it should be tops! But firstly, how was your day? What did you get up to? It was very warm hey! I worked in the morning and then raced home to spend the afternoon painting my room. There is only one thing more fun then watching paint dry, it’s putting it on the wall in the first place! My room is so small I couldn’t actually move everything to get to all the walls, so Ill have to do it in bits, but wow, hours of fun! At least I have a topic to write on now, how exciting!

Whilst it may seem like a less receptive and supportive environment then school, Uni has lots of support networks for students on campus. First things first, Careers Advisor…

At Sydney we never seem to do things by halves, so we have an entire Careers Centre established. The Careers Centre provides a variety of services, from the 24hr CV checking service, to Careers Markets they run throughout the year for employers to come in and meet students. The centre has advisors to help you define your interests and possible career paths following the completion of your degree which is tops, but then they also help you prepare your CV and give you training for interviews and the like. One of the advantages about Sydney Uni is that it is really well received in the business community, so in lots of instances companies come to us for you rather then the other way round! How cool is that, yeah they’ve seen how tops you are! They want you! If you want some more information have a look at their funky website, it is http://www.careers.usyd.edu.au/

Life in general can be pretty tough at times, and we have counsellors who you can contact if you have any problems what so ever. At Uni in particular you will be exposed to lots of different pressures and environments that you probably haven’t experienced before, so it’s good to know that there is a really strong support network that is already in place at the Uni. I always thought that I could work through my problems by myself, but I have seen counsellors over the last couple of years and it has always been tops. Even if you think a problem is pretty small its always good to go and talk to someone about it, just to get another perspective in most instances. The Union provides counsellors who can help you through most things (They probably wont help with your Psychology assignments though), so check out there website at http://www.usyd.edu.au/stuserv/welfare/counselling/index.shtml

These two support systems you would probably have experienced at school, but seeing we love you, there are lots more on offer too! One area that is tops is the Maths and Language centres that can help you with your study. If your not so good at English or Maths and you’re having trouble in your classes you can get help from these centres! How good is that! Well, I think its tops, its like having tutors around to help you all the time. Yeah, one words, Tops!

One service that you may not have considered but is super doper handy is the Accommodation service. The Accommodation service is a central body that helps find places for you to stay, so its super handy if your moving down from the country or wanting to move out of home. It takes a lot of the hard work out of finding a place, and it helps make sure you find a descent place (you should ask Cath how some of her places have been!). I’m going to use that words again, Tops!

The three other main services that most of you will come into contact with are the Security Services (the Bus to the station at Cumberland and Camperdown), the financial services and the Health services. If you’re a little low on funds then you can get a loan from the Union, which is really good if you need a spot of cash (I thought about seeing if they wanted to sponsor me to do Targa Tasmania, but I’m not sure the funds would extend that far, or that I would in fact be eligible to borrow for a car rally…). The Union also provides a Doctor and Dentist as well, and this is really handy if you’re a bit short of cash too, as they bulk bill. Whilst lots has been said about VSU and the like, it’s the loss of these services that will probably hurt us all the most, so that’s just one thing to keep in mind… Check out the Student Services Website at http://www.usyd.edu.au/stuserv/ if you want some more info too!

Well there is yet another rant. Thanks a 1000 for the comment too, I was thinking of writing about how to make sure you don’t get burnt between classes. Now at least I have something to write about tomorrow!!! Yay!!!

Okay then, speak to yous soon ey!

Brendi (Lots of people call me this, do you think it makes me sound feminine?)
