« When the party’s over (or when work begins)… and how I plan to escape the impending banana shortage | Main | Urban Tribes: tips on moving out »

Someone once told me that Tuesdays are a horrible way to spend one-seventh of your life, and but for the great TV viewing (I hope we're all on the same page here), I tend to agree.

Last Tuesday (or is it this Tuesday? In any case, I mean the Tuesday of two days ago) I went to the Careers Colussus, and though I didn't find a job, I did notice a few oddities about graduate employers that I thought I'd impart to you...

First of all, don't try to get a job at the careers fair if you do not plan on being an accountant. (Kidding - kind of. The Careers Centre does try to cater to all degrees, but accounting and consultancy firms do make up a large proportion of the employers represented.)

This is good news for all you finance majors. Yay - all those callouses from abacus overuse weren't in vain!

Secondly, if you are trying (or hoping) to scam free stuff, like any bona fide uni student, you have come to the right place. If I were at the Oscars, I might have likened it to the gift bags the presenters receive (though I'm unsure why my Lexus hasn't been delivered yet...) Employers spend a motza on marketing and they reckon they can lure us poor unsuspecting fools into their corporate dens with keyrings shaped like Rubix cubes...and they are correct. I have never seen so many people enthusing over pens, post-its and paper clips. Not to mention the uproar over the shortage of thongs (of the foot variety) at the Unigrad stand. And I don't even want to go near the tactics I saw some kids use in order to swipe extra lolly packets - although it did remind me that East European nations have certainly taught us Westerners a thing or two about fighting for food.

Third - if you are looking for new friends who are ridiculously good-looking and wholesome, you should get a job as a graduate. I'm not kidding - they all look like they stepped out of a Tommy Hilfiger spread. You can see the apples in their cheeks, for God's sake. Some people commented that I may be only saying this because I'm jealous, and to them I say: you would be too.

My final take on the Careers fair? Graduating is not such a distant thing. This might be a bit repetitious, but I'm terrified of graduating and having to become 'grown-up.' I saw heaps of friends at the Colussus looking for jobs, which made me wonder why I wasn't...and I guess the truth is, ironically, being at the Careers Fair makes me want to continue as a student. So I'll be around for the free lollies for a few more years, at least.
