Life is full of irony! For example, people who wear glasses are considered intelligent although if you think about it, they actually have a disorder with an organ of their body. The great Alanis Morisette ruminated on this topic, and in fact dedicated a whole song to this idea. And there is no better irony while at uni than having time during uni holidays to travel the world, but with hardly more than a pittance to do so. Enough with the kvetching (there’s my favourite Yiddish word popping up again!), I need your advice.
Situation: 9 weeks holiday off uni in July and August (don’t ask, just trust me!)
Problem: Agitation to take advantage of the holidays and travel yet wanting to stay back in Sydney and work.
Solution: Go away for approximately 3 weeks and work for the other 6.
Problem: destination unknown………..(keep in mind I am going to India for 5 weeks at the end of the year).
Criteria:
• Somewhere not too far away (well, coming from Australia it doesn’t leave you with a great deal of options but I mean somewhere that doesn’t take more than lets say 1500 hours to travel to!)
• Reasonable budget……I can afford to live off more than creamed corn and lettuce on crackers but cant afford the luxury of room service.
• Travelling alone. This is not an invitation for your sympathy. I think I make great company and quite like spending time with myself!
• Aim of holiday is to relax and explore – which could include a whole range of activities from being a beach bum, kayaking, learning how to speak whale or even dancing around a forest naked (did I say that out loud?) Sun and minimal rain is a must.
• Duration – Flexible but ideally 3 weeks.
Options:
NZ – been there, done that.
Skiing – hmmm…..haven’t yet ever been skiing/snowboarding and too embarrassed to make a fool of myself. (well that, and also being a physio makes you appreciate having an intact body just that little bit more!)
Tasmania – too cold
Kokoda trail – a little bit more expensive than room service!
Thailand – Cyclone Larry’s cousin might make an unannounced visit.
Pacific Islands – too lazy to research.
Bali – don’t want to spend 20 years in gaol.
Vietnam – not enough time to explore the whole region.
Northern Territory – running out of ideas to refute this destination…..
So ladies and gentleman, and seems like Northern Territory is the way to go for the moment. But please feel free to share your ideas and experiences and help me with this stressful situation. I think I am in need of a holiday after all this thinking!!

Keren, have you ever done the 'holiday at home' holiday where you stay at a hotel in the city you live? I had to do it a few times during school (because of these national competitions I got in where everyone came to canberra) and it was really fun! You get to see what your home town looks like from a tourist's perspective, and you also get to escape home without having to pack a bootload of stuff just for a weekend away! And best of all, it's cheap... :P
good luck holiday-hunting
