I went to the same school as Ben Lee. Although I cannot claim that I remember him, or even spoke to him, we did indeed walk through the same gates every day for a year and would have attended the same boring school assemblies. That alone is enough of a cause for me to boast. And now I have moved on to someone bigger and better. I can now boast about a Sydney Uni law graduate for whom I have utter admiration – Mr. Tim Freedman.

I went to The Whitlams concert on the weekend which was promoting their fabulous new CD Little Cloud. Now I have been to quite a few concerts in my day – Counting Crows, Robbie Williams, and I’ll even admit to going to and enjoying the Beach Boys concert in 1998!! But Robbie’s sex appeal and the Beach Boys animation were no match for the inspiring poetic lyrics which were dancing from Mr. Freedman’s mouth.

“I miss you girl like I miss the skyline of my own hometown
And I love you like I love the familiar feeling of being homeward bound”

Back Street Boys eat your heart out. Tim’s songs contain none of the soppiness found on 106.5, yet all the charm and romanticism to make a girl go weak at the knees. What makes the music even better is that they are locals who you might just bump into on King St or Bondi Beach.

"All’s fair in love and war in the Eastern Suburbs I suppose
So I emptied the contents of my pocket in your nose"

I must admit, I am no intellectual poet. A lot of the lyrics are way too sophisticated for my left-side-dominant brain and deserve to be something studied for the HSC syllabus! Nonetheless, I can use my skills I learnt from English in High School and know that any interpretation will do.

The band is real and alive, the lyrics are purposeful and their music is light enough to bop your head to with none of that head banging business.

“I throw my head up into the sky
Thank Dionysius for a little while I was alive”

Comments

Thanks for the post - I love The Whitlams and I think I might have been at the same gig.

I agree, it was awesome!

PS Can you guys keep the music posts going? I liked the Faker one too

Nicely put,
Tim Friedman is a talented guy. His ability to consume enormous amounts of wine is definitely something to be admired.
