When I was in high school, my perception of what uni was like was all based on the movie Road Trip and the TV show Felicity. I thought university was about frat parties, sex (or at least the opposite sex), cramming for exams and making out amongst the huge shelves of books in the library.
And I don’t think I was too off the mark in Australia! (I don’t want to even think about what goes on in Fischer library late at night).
But one of the big things that is missing from Australian universities are the fraternity parties. We certainly can and do put on some great parties. We enjoy drinking, dancing and schmoozing. But for some reason they just don’t have the same feel (or the same snobbiness) as the frat parties seem to on Felicity.
Last week, I was a co-host for an Australian attempt at a charity frat party!
The charity was Oxfam which me and a few friends are fundraising for…(see previous blog for more details.)
The location was my friend's very big back yard. (God was on our side and stopped the rain!)
The people consisted of 200 friends of the 4 hosts, plus their friends, plus friends of friends of friends.
The average amount of drinks consumed per person was 12.
The money raised was $2500 profit.
What made it a frat party, besides seeing 18 – 24 year olds make complete fools of themselves, was the entertainment.
There was an ice luge. Imagine a huge rectangular block of ice. Now imagine three tunnels that have been chiseled away. Imagine 3 people at the bottom of the luge with their mouths at the end of it. Imagine a shot of vodka being poured down each tunnel and going straight into 3 awaiting mouths. That is an ice luge my dear friend! Not widely done in Australia but lots of fun nonetheless.
Then there was beer pong. It involves beer, a ping pong ball, and an imagination.
And we also had some token American exchange students. They were loving it!
All in all it was a very successful party with lots of money for a great cause. No collateral damage, no rain, no injuries, just one hell of a mess to clean up at the end.
And now my perception of American college life is complete!

I'm sorry I missed it... then again, I might get to some of the real thing in Canada... =)
