End of an era

20 November, 2006

When does one finish their undergrad degree? I have harped on about the excitement of finishing classes and the banality of exam periods, but now I am officially done. The only thing left to do is to unravel my results and then slap on a square hat and cape, shake hands with an academic and graduate!! When people ask me what do I do, I can no longer say I’m a student (although concession cards last till March!) It’s all over red rover.

This feeling was punctuated with a graduation party on Saturday night, hosted by a generous fellow physio graduate. In fact, it was extra good because not only was it our last opportunity to take pictures of our class mates in an inebriated state, but we all donated money to the charity 40K home and raised $2000. (On that note, anyone wishing to attend a charity ball in 2 weeks time with guests including the Warratahs, Bryce Courtenay and the likes should check out the website for more details.)

It kind of felt like the after party at my year 12 formal (only, there was no preceding formal and definitely no corsages!) It was probably the last time I would see Mr.BZ’s goofy grin, hear Mr. TW call me Karen and admire Mr. NC’s dancing style. There are those who I know I will keep in touch with, and there are those that I’ll be satisfied to see in the work force or at a 10 year reunion.

Here are some statistics from our year (NB numbers were provided and calculated by Keren)

People in our year – Approximately 180 give or take.

Couples: 4.5 (0.05% found their companion doing physio)- One relationship is just starting to blossom. One couple are embarking on their honeymoon soon and I’m giving the other 3 long standing relationships 1.5 years before engagement.

People undertaking another 4 years of study immediately: 6 (again, numbers produced by Keren and are subject to bias.) 4 graduating physios have been accepted into Graduate Medicine at Sydney Uni, 1 at Wollongong and 1 at Notre Dame University in Perth. Although these people are all enthusiastic to be saving lives, I can not imagine committing to another 4 years of being at the mercy of Centrelink and academics!

Number of people travelling next year: 3 that I have heard of. Can you believe that?? We are pretty much all getting sucked into the rat race 2 months after finishing exams. 3 brave souls are venturing to the heartland of South America and letting their souls run amok whilst the majority of us battle out full time work. Having said that, we have all been offered jobs for one year and have decided that experience is an invaluable commodity to have tucked under your belt.

So, my dear readers, as you can see the party season has begun, but so has nostalgia. I have come to the end of another era.

congratulations on making the transition from Student to graduant, i'm sure you're going to relish the more formally celebrated metamorphosis from graduant to graduate, and then into a formally graduated physio.
it's all about change, in some respects it means growth from an abstract mould into a meaningful form, but sometimes it's about chiselling away at that big rock to sculpt what you're gonna become.

Glad to hear the party season has begun, i'll see you around the bender.

P.S. what does this mean for the health of your blogs now?

Rahil: I'm looking forward to some very drunk and disorderly blogs from Keren...!
