Just a couple of hundred meters down the road from Sydney Uni along King Street is my favourite place in Newtown (though Newtown Thai II comes a VERY close second) - Kuletos the cocktail bar.
Kuletos is a rather small, long bar but it has a great atmosphere. Music plays at the perfect volume and you can chat by candlelight whilst enjoying your delicious cocktails, and if you’re lucky you can even snag a couch. This was the first bar I went to when I turned 18, though I was very disappointed that they didn’t ask for my id!!
Throughout the year I’ve steadily worked my way through the menu, and I think I’m just past the 3/4 mark. My hands down favourites have got to be Bananarama and Red Corvette. Yummy!
On Monday - Saturday, Kuletos has a happy hour (and a half!) from 6 - 7.30, and an extra hour on Thursday from 9.30 - 10.30. During happy hour you can buy any cocktail on the menu and your order gets doubled.
You have to get there early to get a table during happy hour because it gets absolutely chockers - last Thursday I went as a post exam celebration and it seems everyone else at Sydney Uni had the same thought. It took me 20 minutes to get from the front to the back of the bar just to go to the toilet, which involved several uncomfortably close moments with strangers. When I got back to where my friends were (another 20 minutes later), one friend said she also needed to go the toilet and I advised her that it would probably take less time to go to another bar altogether, so we ducked into Marly bar and as predicted it took less than a quarter of the time.
So, for a taste of sophistication and suave without paying too much, stroll into Kuletos next time you’re in Newtown...

I heart their Japanese Slipper. It is awesome and a must for summer nights in Newtown!
