Decisions......

24 December, 2006

By now, the phone calls by curious acquaintances are diminishing as you are becoming more and more familiar with your UAI. Now you just have to decide if your first preference* is what you want.

I would claim that there is no such thing as the ‘right’ degree but there are certainly ‘wrong’ degrees for certain individuals. For example, if I chose to do a bachelor of visual arts, then I’m pretty sure I would cry myself to sleep after being gently informed that a cat holding a paintbrush with his paw could produce better artworks than me! In fact, the process of deduction was the initial steps of how I chose my degree. I definitely knew what I didn’t what to do (including visual arts!) which narrowed my choices of what I did want to do.

I suppose I ended up choosing physio because I had a passion for science, a panache for sport and it seemed like a rewarding career. Actually, part of the attraction was that when I finished uni, I wouldn’t have to mull over what to do next in this journey of life. A job would await me. Plus I have had vocational experience throughout my years of studying which has proved to be invaluable. Vocational courses are quite specific but are packaged quite attractively!

Having said all that, university doesn’t have to be an institution whose purpose is to merely be a building block towards a certain career. University is also a lifestyle. An education. An opportunity to expand horizons. Broad degrees such as arts and science can also provide a whirlwind of experiences and give you the chance to explore what you are passionate about.

Lastly, what you end up putting as your first preference – whether you change it or leave it as is, is not set in stone. My sister started doing psychology before transferring to commerce to then work for IBM doing computer stuff!! My brother started electrical engineering before realising that university wasn’t for him, became a chef, but is now back at university studying digital media. Just remember, it may take a while before you find what you really want to do so don’t be disheartened.

Decisions can be daunting, but choosing your preferences are not irrevocable…..in fact, nothing in life is irreversible.

*Preferences can be changed up until January 4th 2007
