Sometimes you don't really believe that there are many others who think like you. Then you get 26 applications from fellow law students to join you on the SULS Social Justice and Equity Committee...

I'm the Vice President (Social Justice) of the Sydney University Law Society, or SULS, as it is affectionately known. It is my responsibility to bring a full range of social justice initiatives to law students. From workshops, seminars, mentoring programs to journals, social events and public interest activities, the Social Justice portfolio puts the soul back into Australia's future lawyers.

The law school has been blessed to have given birth to many outstanding social justice campaigners in the law. Names like High Court Justices Michael Kirby and Mary Gaudron are two of the impressive ones that come immediately to mind.

Over the last few weeks, applications were open for students interested in working on the Social Justice and Equity Committee. The students who are selected will be given a generous budget for producing events and activities that educate and activate law students on public interest and equity issues in our society.

I initially decided to study law because I had the desire to change the world. When 26 of your fellow peers also apply to be on a little, old SJ committee, you realise that there is an undercurrent of rebel rousers in the law faculty - who like me - want to see the law work for a more just and equitable community.

Woohoo!

Hey Ghassan,

I've been reading your blog over the past few days, and I thought that I'd just write a quick little message to say hello.

I'm actually quite excited. I'm hoping to head back to uni this coming June to do an MA, and it's all a bit surreal. I've been out of uni for about 3 years now (graduated in 2004), and sine then have been dying to get back.

Firstly, a little about me (and I can't believe I'm posting this in a public blog, but whatever, you only live once, right). I'm originally from Preston-sur-le-beau-lac in Canada, and have been living in good ol' Oz for about 2 years now. I graduated from York University in Toronto with an Honours degree in Political Science (focusing on the politics of race, racism and sexuality). Since graduating, I did a complete shift and starting working for a consulting firm, and then ended up here in Sydney work in Film production (on the business side of things).

Anyhow, I've been thinking of going back to uni for an MA for a while, and have decided to take a huge leap of faith. I'll be doing in part-time, and luckily my employer has been kind enough to let me do it (although I'll still be working like 50 hours a week).

Anyhow - why this post? Well, whilst I'm excited about going back to uni, I'm, for some strange reason, a bit nervous. I've been out of uni action for a few years now, have no idea what the uni experience is like here in Oz, don't know the culture at USYD, and know absolutely no one at USYD. So - I emailed you - perhaps to pick your brain on your experiences/advice.

Cheers,
Déric-Francois
