Hello all,
This blogs marks the continuation and subsequent conclusion of my 'eating food' blog- a truly wonderful guide to the most supremely wonderful places to, so to speak, stuff one's face at our great university. Last week I covered the cafe 'Mint', the Wentworth Kebab shop and the watering hole we call Manning Bar. Be sure to check that out if you haven't already.
XQuisitos: While technically a franchise, XQuisitos still manages to churn out food that sidesteps the mainstream. Their main dishes include savoury crepes, pancakes, nachos, burritos, potatoes and … fresh fruit juice? Regardless of their ability to successfully bend food genres, it’s safe to say this: never before has multi-coloured mush in a roll actually tasted this good. The stack of hotcakes for breakfast is also rather good at accompanying last minute Maths test revision. It’s on the bottom floor of Manning House, in the courtyard outside.
Engineering Cafe: The Engineering Cafe will always hold an important place in the hearts of, well, the engineers. Filled with all the stereotypical blokey foods, their steady supply of burgers, coffee, and sour cream a la wedges eases many a post-tutorial blues (yes, the equations will actually make you cry). Breakfast times also presents the ever satisfying Bacon and Egg roll. Also a favoured place to congregate, most engineers can be found here at lunchtimes- eating, studying, or trialing their latest, um, engineering thing. Oh, and they are supported by Access- so yay for discounts to those with cards.
Ralph’s Café: Something has to be said about Italians and food. Then again – it doesn’t, really. Just go to the Ralph’s on the bottom floor of the Arena Sports centre, and you’ll see what I mean. This family business serves up a vast plethora of reaaaaally good food; sandwiches, rolls, baguettes, wraps, etc. filled to the brim with the best Italian meats, cheeses, and (if you’re into that stuff) vegetables. Once toasted, these will impress you to no end with how ridiculously tasty they actually are. If it wasn’t for the distance of the café from the Engineering areas, and the fact that it’s a bit on the dearer side, I’d have no hesitation to get food from here all the time. Did I mention that they have a gigantic espresso machine?
So there you go – just a few more examples of fine/good value dining at this old University. For sure, there’s other good places to eat; you’ll just have to find them for yourself. Or of course, you could take a short walk in either direction, to Newtown or to Broadway in Glebe, and find even more good stuff to eat. For sure, you could even join the ranks of people that now follow the ‘Thai Food For Lunch’ doctrine- ever searching for the biggest laksa in the Sydney’s east. Catch you all soon :P
