HEY GUYS!

Let me just start by saying thanks to everyone that came, and I hope you found it worthwhile and useful. Most importantly I hope you enjoyed yourself. But for those who missed out, this Pick-A-Path will simulate the day and be almost as fun:

START:

1 – Modes of arrival. Pick an option:
.....You decide to catch the train to central and hop on a free shuttle bus (GO TO SECTION 2)
.....You drive and park on or around campus, or walk from another bus stop (GO TO SECTION 3)
.....You walk from Redfern station (GO TO SECTION 4)

2
You see the information booth at Railway Square and get a little excited. You casually stroll up and ask where the buses depart from, and are greeted with a friendly smile by one of the students in the booth. “Just over there, chap!” says Courtney, pointing to a bus that’s teetering on the wrong side of full. She hands you a showbag and you quickly run towards the bus, making it on as the last person. The bus makes its way up George St, then Broadway, then into campus. What lies ahead is a multi-coloured world of fun, and you see people bustling all over the place, their noses stuck in maps. You’ve decided the first thing you want is:
.....To attend a mini lecture (GO TO SECTION 5)
.....FOOD (GO TO SECTION 6)

3
Balloons, of all shapes and sizes are speckled throughout the campus, which is colourfully decorated in blue and yellow. It’s beautiful and warm and you think you could bask in the sun on the comfy-looking front lawns all day, but you get handed a showbag, excitedly rip open the program, and decide you first want:
.....FOOD (GO TO SECTION 6)
.....To go on a campus tour (GO TO SECTION 7)

4
You enter the University through the Engineering precinct, admiring the pretty wooden boardwalk and little lights speckled along the boards… You smell a barbecue and wonder if you can score yourself a snag. Wow, free! You slather on some sauce and chow it down, and then walk up the stairs into the Wentworth building. To your right you notice some odd-looking deck chairs and a quaint church-shaped building surrounded by what looks like a moat. Is this part of the university?! You finally cross the City Rd footbridge to find a very bustling and excited mass of people along Eastern Avenue. You are handed a showbag by a friendly student; you flip open the program and decide you want:
To attend a mini lecture (GO TO SECTION 5)
To go on a campus tour (GO TO SECTION 7)

5
You’ve already circled all the cool lectures you want to attend in the LIVE program. Biology! Economics!! DR KARL!!!! You are quick to realise you have no idea where Eastern Avenue Auditorium or Wallace Theatre are. You dash to the nearest information booth and ask a friendly looking adviser. They send you scurrying along and you bump into lots of people on the way to the lecture theatre, where you take a seat and wait for the talk to begin. It proves quite informative and you want to learn more. You decide to:
.....Talk to an academic advisor (GO TO SECTION 8)
.....CHILL OUT on the lawns (GO TO SECTION 10)

6
From the front lawns you can hear a dull roar coming from inside the quad – it is not a lion, but rather the crazy, ambient vibe of Sydney Uni Live – students galore, food, bands, and even a Jacaranda tree which has attached to it a famous legend among students. As you get closer the noise gets louder and you see band wearing rather interesting attire playing on the main stage. You jump in the food queue. You munch down the tasty Union food and then decide to:
.....Talk to an academic advisor (GO TO SECTION 8)
.....Check out another Sydney Uni campus! (GO TO SECTION 9)

7
You’re in for a ride! The University comes with a rich history and a ton of quirky facts. As you walk through the crowded quad, down Science Road past the Bank Building (which actually contains a post office, not a bank!), through the graffiti tunnel (one guess as to what’s in there), out past Manning Bar, down along the square into Ralph’s café, where you might recognise a familiar face… Your guide may show you past the oldest real grass tennis courts in Australia, Dr Karl’s office, a rock climbing wall, and the university ovals where A-league rugby is played on the weekends. As the tour extends you aren’t quite sure where you are anymore, or what you are seeing but you know that it is damned beautiful! You check out the residential colleges, dart through between Wesley and Women’s, and somehow pop out of a bush and right back to where you started. What a whirlwind! It’s definitely time to:
.....Check out another Sydney Uni campus! (GO TO SECTION 9)
.....CHILL OUT on the lawns (GO TO SECTION 10)

8
The Great Hall and McLaurin Hall are filled with academics, students and other people from all the different faculties specifically there to answer all your questions! No question is a silly question when it comes to choosing a degree: everyone in here understands that you may have no idea what uni is all about, and that’s the whole point of the day – to get informed! These academics are really here to let you know all about the courses we have to offer… but at the very least you can score a free pen or lanyard! You’re so excited to have learnt so much but you’ve had a long, successful day, and now it’s time to go home! (GO TO SECTION 11)

9
Your faculty of interest lies on a different campus so it’s time to hop on a free shuttle bus and make your way there! The conservatorium of Music, Sydney College of the Arts, and the Nursing School are all open today and you can check out the campus vibe and ask some questions. When you’re done, hop on the shuttle bus back to main campus, and then:
.....CHILL OUT on the lawns (GO TO SECTION 10)
.....Call it a (darn fun) day and go home (GO TO SECTION 11)

10
It’s such a lovely day, and those front lawns look so tempting. You lie down and soak up the sun, chatting with your friends about what you learnt today, or daydream about being a student and sitting here with a coffee on breaks between class... You dozed off! I think it’s time to:
.....Chat to an academic about a course (GO TO SECTION 8)
.....Call it a (darn fun) day and go home (GO TO SECTION 11)

11
You bid farewell to Sydney Uni. If it’s late in the day maybe you can score a bunch of balloons. Hopefully you’re leaving with more knowledge than you came with, and are on your way to making a decision about the big wide world of uni… there really are no limits!

If you missed out, don’t worry. We have Info Day on the 6th of January which is mainly geared towards year 12 students, because the UAC preferences close the following day. Basically it’s a last minute tool to check out what we have to offer and what course you might want to do! It’s also great because you’ll already have your UAI and you can have an idea of what courses to do. Otherwise, you can come to our open day next year, it’s set to be a blast. See you there!

Also, don't forget you can always call our helpline on 1300 362 006, or ask us questions on this blog! We love comments :)

Hey Asako, I love your blogs. They're hilarious and very informative ;)

I was wondering; since I doubt Ill get the OP I need to get into the architecture course straight up next year, would it be hunky-dory to do a year of arts, or maybe arts/sciences and then transferring?

Hi Josh!

I'm glad you are enjoying the blogs. They are great for procrastination during the HSC if nothing else!

So, you want to do architecture. Of course its okay to do one year of Arts or Arts/Science (or in fact any degree) and then attempt to transfer in.

However you have to be careful of a few things:

a) transferring is NOT guaranteed. You have to be getting good academic marks in your first year because when you reapply they will take this into consideration (along with your OB/UAI), and you will be competing with next year's cohort. So you have to be happy with the first degree you chose in case you don't get in. I would suggest researching other unis that have Architecture and putting them on your preference list as well.

b) Architecture is a unique degree, and chances are you won't get any (or much) credit from your first degree. This means if you study Arts for one year then change to architecture, you must be willing to start again from scratch. You may have a chance of getting credit if you transfer from another architecture degree (from another university).

I have an earlier post devoted entirely to the art of transferring degrees, you should have a squiz:

http://blogs.usyd.edu.au/sydneylife/2008/07/transferring_degrees.html

ALSO! There is one last thing to mention if you want to study architecture, and that is that they have a flexible entry program.

This means that if your UAI falls within 5 points of the cut off (I'm not sure of the OB equivalent) you still have a chance to get in.

Basically you have to submit an extra letter stating why you want to get in, and also produce a portfolio of work. They obviously don't expect you to have much or any architecture experience, but they ask for other forms of work: art, photography, or even poetry; anything that demonstrates your creativity and expression.

Please check out these very important websites regarding flexible entry:

Feel free to comment again if you have any other questions, or call our helpline on 1300 362 006.

GOOD LUCK!

-Asako
