The trip to Copenhagen was fantastic. We travelled with a group of maybe 40 international students to Copenhagen where we were shown around by one of the guides organised by Aarhus University. There’s this association set up by the uni purely for international students. They have “International Bar Night” every Tuesday night; which has been a great place to meet up with everyone now we’ve all split up into our various faculties.
The bar’s great. It’s in this huge old warehouse right on the water, and because they know that students want as cheap drinks as possible, they have these amazing deals. Like 10 shots for 20 bucks! Although be warned...Danish spirits taste horrible!! The Danes make anything and everything taste like peppery liquorice. Otherwise they take delight in making the unsuspecting foreigners try their national drink...unflavoured schnapps. Don’t do it!!! It tastes something like cut-down forest! Haha.
And yes, the deals are greatly appreciated! You’ve probably heard that Scandinavia is expensive to live in, and yes that’s no lie. The first night I went out to a bar (that wasn’t the Studenterhuset), I happily handed over a 50 Kroner note (about $13) to a bar tender when I ordered a bottle of cider. These bottles are about the size of a Corona bottle, so I was waiting there for a while for my change and it just never came!!! And that was when we all learnt the reason why Danes don’t head out of pre-parties to clubs until about 2am!
Actually there are some places that are trying to entice the Danes to head there before that time. One in particular, called “Social Club” offers unlimited free beer from 11 til 12. Still, the place just seems packed with us foreigners. It’s amazing how fast everyone’s drinking habits are changing to include beer...
