The best part of semester

15 September, 2009

Had a great trip to the Bureau En Gros (stationary shop) last Monday. For some reason I love picking out pens, books folders etc... This was followed by the dreaded trip to the uni bookstore, the worst of the damage was my $166 electromagnetism book.

The other thing about canada is that you need to get ready for winter early, so the shorts are going away, and jackets are coming out, even though its only the 3rd week of autumn. It's an exciting time, starting uni in a new city - everything is new and you feel like a first year again, I dont even know where the uni bar is!

Field work with Luke

11 September, 2009

Today I took the train to Whoop-whoop to help my fellow honours sacrificial lamb – erm, student – find field sites for his honours project.

Here he is, trying to look for spiders up a tree – Science, you’re doing it wrong...

Howdy kids,

Well, it’s already three months in to the Magical Land of Honours, and EVERYBODY wants a piece of action!

Slowly, we bright young things are being transformed into caffeinated zombies (below), so grab your tin-foil hats, lest we catch you and try to suck your brains out through your earholes...

Through the looking glass…

8 September, 2009

When one attends University in a building strongly resembling a castle replete with dungeon rooms on every floor (more than any other Conservatorium in Australia, I am informed), one expects weird and wonderful things to happen with alarming frequency. Perhaps it is this perpetuated expectation that leads all the weird and not-so wonderful things that occur to go by either completely unnoticed or else linked to fiercely outrageous conspiracy theories.

The most recent of these occurred last week, when, much like the poor puppet pals in that infamous YouTube video , my leisurely practice-room patrol was disturbed by a mysterious and relentless noise. Not a ticking per se, but a beeping. Was this some kind of ‘tell-tale heart’ reference for the electronic generation? A carelessly abandoned metronome? Just like any Hogwarts-schooled super-sleuth would do, I followed the sound, keeping an ear to the wall…

Hello the internet

7 September, 2009

Hello, the Internet!
I’ve just started doing Honours in Biology with the Behaviour and Physiology Research Group run by Prof. Steve Simpson here at the University of Sydney. I’ve had a rabid obsession with biology and ecology for quite a long time. I once owned a small colony of guinea pigs (species name) which became so in-bred over time that they rebelled and built a nuclear device out of lucerne pellets and launched a sneak attack on the rabbits next door. I will never know why.

But back to the reason why I’m writing this – HONOURS! What is it all about?

STUDY TIME!

6 September, 2009

It is always a lot easier to talk the talk than walk the walk when it comes to study. I have come to realise that although I work hard when push comes to shove, it still takes a lot for me to actually settle down and hit the books. But you know, there are plenty of things that I know about studying and how to maximise a study session / essay writing session that, when I do put them in practice, are very effective. Obviously I am, at times, too lazy to put them in practice - which leads to assignments being handed in just in the nick of time (or a little late... oops! don't do this!) - HOWEVER I do this knowing that I could have followed my easy steps towards effective study / essay writing, and consciously ignoring these easy steps means that I only have myself to blame for a dud mark.

So.

Let me teach you how to study, when you can be bothered...
