This is my last post. After finishing my fifth year at uni, time seems to run away from you as life becomes filled with work and other pursuits. So tonight, as a new batch of year twelves await the final outcome of their HSC year and embark on making the next decision about their education, I thought it timely to look back on the best and worst parts of being a uni student...
One of the cool things about uni is actually finishing your degree and graduating. It's a chique little ceremony full of pomp and tradition, which made me laugh and excited at the same time.
Today, I wore that silly little hat too...
The day finally arrived after much anticipation. I was allowed to take my first day off work for the big day. My family took me out for dinner for the occasion. I bought new clothes for this event. (I was even going to get my hair coloured and cut but the hairdresser was totally booked.). Yes, the day arrived where I received recognition for 4 years of hard work at university. I graduated.
Rhetorical question for the day: why is there a need to get engaged straight after leaving uni??
Housework used to be one of those items on my to do list that was expendable. If I was feeling generous, or rather guilty, I would perhaps do some washing or unpack the dishwasher. But those days are gone as housework has come to claim revenge on my independent living style. See, I have moved out of home, into the nursing quarters of Katoomba hospital.
Today, I woke up at 6:30am. Tomorrow, I will again wake up at 6:30. Then it’s the weekend. But the week after that I will be arising at 6:30 am every day. Yes my dear friends, the time has come for me to abandon my indulgent uni holidays and ripped jeans, for I indeed started my graduate job today.
I can’t put my finger on it yet, but something is amiss. Like I’ve rushed out of the house patting my pockets going “phone/ wallet / keys” and then realised I’m not wearing any pants.
I think it’s got something to do with the fact that (shhh!) I’m not a student anymore.
When does one finish their undergrad degree? I have harped on about the excitement of finishing classes and the banality of exam periods, but now I am officially done. The only thing left to do is to unravel my results and then slap on a square hat and cape, shake hands with an academic and graduate!! When people ask me what do I do, I can no longer say I’m a student (although concession cards last till March!) It’s all over red rover.
While Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes decide on a wedding date, and Mark Viduka breaks a toe playing soccer, I have completed my last ever class as an undergraduate. Woohoo!
If we believe clichés, then all good things must come to an end. What goes up, must come down. All journeys have their destinations.
But what if you took the journey, and missed the destination? What if you’re still up, waiting to fall? And what if your good thing has ended, without you being there to witness it?
On Wednesday, June 7, I had my last tutorial. Ever. (Maybe.)
