So, you’re probably either feeling elated, ambivalent, or disappointed. Perhaps you received the UAI you were after, and you’ve got a good chance of getting into the course of your choice. Maybe you’re so close to last year’s cut offs that you’re not quite sure whether your UAI will be enough. Or maybe you now have to step back, reassess and change your preferences because your results were less than you’d hoped.
You know it is the festive season when you finally have something to talk about with those acquaintances where the conversation often dithers into a spiral of polite nods and awkward silences. You can pick any topic from the most useless xmas present to the effects of climate change on our Sydney summer.
This one goes out to the second-place getters. The ones who get a Band 6 for all their subjects bar one (an 89, I tell you, in English Advanced! Plagues me to this day!) The ones who never get the attention of the attractive boy/girl in the corner, but always have a trusty friend with whom to dance the night away. The ones who are on dial up and get their results at 9:05am. The ones whose UAI is one mark below the cut-off for their dream course...
I'm a notorious second-place getter, but believe me, I'm not bitter. Well, not that bitter. And here's why...
So, it’s come to this, has it? Thirteen years of education (fourteen if you’re unlucky), one year of hell, and then a week where you’d be lucky to remember anything between raucous parties and bottles of “Stalin’s own” vodka. And it all boils down to a 6:00 start on the 19th of December when HSC results are released, and then a nervous 24 hours until UAI results come out. All the hype, all the terror, all the tears have been transmogrified (by the miracle workers at the Board of Studies) into a number. And then you ask yourself, “is that really all I am?”
Yep, it's finally about to arrive.
Working since Term 4 2005 and it all comes down to four little digits on your computer screen.
Stressed any?
I remember the day when I found my UAI. My mum woke me up really early and stood behind me as I tried to log into the website. When finally my UAI came up – everyone else seemed happy except for me! I did really well, but when your UAI goal is the cut off for Combined Law at USYD (99.55 last year!) you can imagine my disappointment when I got close, yet not close enough.
…It’s the end of the world as we know it…Michael Stipe is one of my favourite musicians. But sometimes his lyrics are as offbeat as his hair is thick and full. It’s not the end of the world! Stop this nonsense right now – you have alternatives, you really do.
The Universe waits with baited breath to see how our young heroes and heroines fare in the battle with the mythical UAI.
Welcome to the sound track of your life, track 18, the UAI. Music is a great way to remember events and celebrate, and that’s what this time should be, a celebration! So here are some ace songs that will make you bust a move to the groove of the UAI!
All in all, it had been a pretty decent party. Started off slowly, until word spread via the technological blessing and curse that is SMS.
