Content discontent

14 February, 2005

D. Keith Robinson has had a rant about content (or lack of) that makes complete sense.

Content won’t magically appear. Most “Web designers” can’t create it for you. It’s important, usually should be priority #1 on a Web project. It takes work, lots of work. It needs a plan, and a process. In many cases creating, editing and managing the content for a Web site of any size is a full time job. For a real person. A content management system won’t do anything on it’s own, and you're better off not wasting your money if you can’t properly implement it.

Slowly people are starting to understand that websites need to be designed. If someone knows how to code a little html and is a dab hand at Dreamweaver, this doesn't mean they can actually design. Similarly, they probably won't know how to write content and nor should they. If you own a website you need to put a lot of thought and effort into not only what kind of content is going to be on your site but how it is going to get there, how it will be kept up to date and how it can be developed.
