Today the National Library launches Libraries Australia - an online catalogue that enables the general public to access the catalogues used by librarians for years. It provides access to the catalogues of over 800 libraries from across Australia. Basically this has meant putting a public front-end on Kinetica.

First impression: I like the 'Google-style' interface. Just one search box. (You can also limit the search to particular types of media).

Comments

This is a very welcome move by the National Library. Access to Kinetica (now Libraries Australia) the national bibliographic database is now free, making it a great resource for the general public and also for many small libraries, which in the past may not have been able to subscribe to it.

Try searching "archibald prize" and limit your search to books and pictures.

Tried the search - very nice. I think the NLA server may be buckling a bit - hope they’ve load tested…
