There's been some heated discussion about the pros and cons of using Second Life in higher ed marketing and general student communication in this office. I haven't got around to writing a post about it but lucky for you somebody else has. Sardionerak at University web marketing and usability has written a quick appraisal of the Second Life presences of three Australian universities. There's also the ever-reliable Karine who wrote last July on using Second Life in uni marketing.

SL is very cool but there are a couple of issues that will impact on any decision to implement it for Uni marketing.

First, there's the limit on the number of residents who can occupy a property at any one time. For its SL launch, the ABC experienced performance problems when more than 50 residents were on ABC Island simultaneously.

Second, SL causes your computer performance to degrade radically. If you're online in SL and you want to check your email, the processing load causes problems and you must wait a long time for the screen to refresh. Your browser may even crash.

As a tool for interaction between Uni staff and students, however, I think SL should be canvassed seriously. It is a very engaging medium.
