HighEdWebDev has started in Rochester, N.Y., and as usual, Karine at collegewebeditor has done a sterling job getting some guest bloggers together. It would have been fantastic to make it there but Rochester IS a long way from Sydney so these guest bloggers will hopefully make the rest of us feel like we're there. If you use Facebook you may also want to check out the HighEdWebDev group.

That is all.

Well, after a prod, here are the promised 'thoughts' on what danah boyd had to say. I'll warn you now, this is a long post.

First, some background on boyd. danah boyd (yes, it's always in lower case) was brought out to Australia by education.au to talk about Generation MySpace - Social networking and its impact on students and education. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of California - Berkeley and a Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at the Harvard Law School. Her Masters was in sociable media. So, basically she knows an awful lot about social media and how we use it.

All up, boyd spoke for several hours. Although this sounds like a lot, she was an engaging speaker who responded well to questions. Her breadth of knowledge and ability to convey it to a large audience was astounding. The points I have drawn out below are just a fraction of what was covered overall, so please do not think I have totally represented her talks.

SXSW

13 March, 2007

South by Soutwest (SXSW) is currently underway in Austin, Texas. For those of us living in jealousy of the likes of our own Daniel Boud, you can check out coverage of the event on the SXSW site which includes podcasts of keynotes and interactive panels and videos of choice bits of the action.

Karine over at collegewebeditor has managed to cajole some of her readers to actually write for her. They're 'live blogging' from the eduWeb Conference currently underway in Baltimore.

Female? Studying IT or similar full time? Then you might be interested in the Google Global Community Scholarship for the Grace Hopper Conference. Google will give you $2500 USD to attend the Grace Hopper Conference in the US. Best of all for Aussies, it's only open to those studying in a Uni OUTSIDE the US.

Candidates must be:

* Enrolled full-time in their undergraduate or graduate study in a university outside of the United States
* In Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field major
* Maintaining a strong academic background with demonstrated leadership ability

More info at Google.

Just a quick mention, for those in or close to the US: the eduWeb Conference is being held in Baltimore 31 July to 1 August. Shelley Wetzel, one of the conference directors says:

The conference focuses on "both sides of the fence" regarding a website: front end - marketing, communications, admissions, library, etc. and back end - IT, development, databases, apps, instructional design, etc. The aim is for poeple to not only learn about what's in their field but to bring a better working relationship among the personnel that now create the Web.
